Recording & methodology
One recorded run per method. Same reference and model. The computer-use run used preset colors because its plugin could not operate the Edit colors dialog.
- Model and task
- gpt-6-astra · low reasoning · default service tier. Recorded 4 October 2026. Both agents recreated the same reference on a blank 800 × 600 Paint canvas at 100% zoom. Importing a replacement image was prohibited.
- Different ways into Paint
- Computer use operated the interface through the installed Windows plugin. Ternfold used Paint’s drawing functions through its API, including RGB colors and batched operations. This demonstrates the two configured workflows; it is not an average across repeated trials.
- What the clock includes
- Elapsed time runs from the drawing-agent launch through completion, including thinking, tool discovery, retries and final inspection. Application preparation is excluded. Computer use saved through the UI; Ternfold’s final PNG was collected through the API. The Ternfold time includes five failed execution calls and their recovery.
- How the video was edited
- After a three-second introduction, both recordings run at 10× on the same elapsed-time scale. The application windows are cropped independently; no drawing steps are cut. At each recorded completion time, its full final PNG replaces the application view. Both final images remain on screen for inspection at the end. The source canvas sometimes scrolls out of view in the computer-use recording.
- What the numbers mean
- 996.371 seconds versus 375.007 seconds: 62.4% less elapsed time. 108 versus 18 completed MCP (Model Context Protocol) tool calls, including five failed Ternfold calls: 83.3% fewer. Computer use also made one shell call to read its plugin documentation, excluded from this count. One Ternfold call can contain many drawing operations. These counts do not measure individual strokes, monetary cost or all agent orchestration calls.
